Welcome back, traders! Today, we're diving into two powerful tools that can enhance your trading strategy: the Fractal Dimension Index (FDI) and the Step EMA. Let's break them down and see how they can work for you.
Step EMA Explained
First up, we have the Step_Ema_LK.mq4. This is a hybrid filter that I developed some time ago. It cleverly swaps out lag based on price for lag based on time, resulting in smoother price movements. This means you can catch those price swings more effectively.
Fractal Dimension Index (FDI)
Next, let’s talk about the LK_FDI_V2.mq4. This is my take on the Fractal Dimension Index, built on similar principles to the FGDI.mq4 you might have seen around. While both tools aim to analyze market trends, there are notable differences. For instance, when dealing with shorter periods, say a 2-bar observation, my version considers it random (around 1.58), while FGDI might give you values above 2.0.
Additionally, my version supports a linear weighted mode, which can help reduce lag in certain scenarios. And let’s not forget about dFDI (the green line on your charts), which represents the FDI’s first derivative or the rate of change.
Interpreting FDI Values
- FDI below 1.5: This usually indicates that we are in a trending market.
- FDI at 1.5: A reading around this mark suggests that the market is random.
- FDI above 1.5: Typically signals that the market is ranging.
Moreover, high dFDI readings indicate a stable trend, which can be very useful for making informed trading decisions.

So there you have it! By incorporating the Fractal Dimension Index and Step EMA into your trading toolkit, you can gain a clearer picture of market dynamics. Happy trading!
